It's hard for me to pick, since I love early metal such as Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, but also enjoy newer metal especially in the 90's and early 2000's.

Oh boy... just one year out of 40?!
It's an easy decision for me, though. 2001 for this album alone:  I could survive without many of my favorites... this one is absolutely irreplaceable. |

As far as recent years go, I'd say 2007 was a fantastic year for metal:
