This is going to be a thread about bands that distinctly sound like another band to the point where it is borderline plagiarism. For example to start it off what I have written in my signature. Steelwing= Iron Maiden and Suicidal angels= Slayer
I have a clear example for steelwing to present because I really Used to like them. Then I realised how much they sound like Iron Maiden it is like they were copying them. I don't have an example for suicidal angels because I never listened to one of their albums all the way through. But if you listen to one of their songs you will hear a distinctive slayer copy or rip off sound. here is my Maiden and steelwing similarity If You can come up with any other bands for this thread please post them and Man those two songs I posted are so similar. |

This is a really good thread Vmoore, it's been a problem I have had quite bit.
I'll start by naming one thing: Dream Theater clones. Edit: I know a lot of people are going to get angry at me for saying this but...Haken. I've felt that up until their recent EP, Haken hasn't done anything original and have just copied bands like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, and recently Gentle Giant. Even though all of those I listed are great bands, I don't want somebody to be a carbon-copy of those. Take this for example: Haken's recent album 'The Mountain' http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/The+Mountain/9385750 Now take a listen to the bands it's copying: Gentle Giant: http://grooveshark.com/#!/gentle_giant Dream Theater 'Scenes From a Memory' http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Metropolis+Part+2+Scenes+From+A+Memory/2446760 There was one solo on 'The Mountain' that sounded EXACTLY like the solo in Dream Theater's 'Home'.

I think there's quite a few glam bands musically wanted to be Kiss. I think there's quite a few Power Metal bands want to be Maiden or Priest. There's plenty of bands want to be Tool.
I'm not sure to what extent they fit the criteria. Eg. Rishloo sound just like Tool at times, and at others sound a billion miles apart. Primal Fear sound like Priest a lot, but other times are not just Priest clones... Metallica and Diamond Head? ...How far does it go and still count? |

The Russian band Aria sounds just like Iron Maiden to the point you can tell which riffs are from which Maiden song. I still like them but it's an exception

One band that I thought of(and Kingcrimsonprog mentioned) is Rishloo.....definitely a lot like Tool. I'd have to listen to them more though to spot the differences. It's been awhile.

Regarding the Dream Theater clones, there is also a vast category of bands that could be labelled (sometimes fairly, other times a bit unfairly) as Queensryche clones. Especially after the release of The Warning and Rage for Order, a multitude of bands in that vein flooded the scene, most of which remained underground though. Lethal's Programmed is a famous example (and one of my all time favorite albums). From more recent years, Malison Rogue stands out.
Maiden clone bands: Most striking example I can think of is Attick Demons from Portugal. The singer is a complete copy of Dickinson and the band totally immitates IM, to the point where there is a song of theirs posted as a new Iron Maiden track and many people thought it was the real deal or at least that Dickinson was a part of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9dciT8tIso Similarly, Monument have another Bruce clone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqYMvByv_0g Strangely enough, they used to sound like Iron Maiden with Ozzy on vocals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMXGuHRQI1Q Wolf from Sweden, one of my favorite bands active at the moment, were heavily influenced by Iron Maiden on their first 3 releases (esp. on ther debut), although their singer does not sound like Bruce and they had some Mercyful Fate and speed metal elements that gave them an edge. They progressed steadily and by their 4th album (and their best imo) Children of the Black Flame have a complete character of their own. Very much worth checking them out anyway, as they are the best heavy/power metal band of the past 15 years imo. Here is one of their most Maiden-ish songs from their debut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HH7_VnPbVM I have spoken with their mainman Niklas (guitar/vocals) and he said that at the time (1999) they wanted to write the songs "that Maiden forgot to write". Then again, like I said they had the Mercyful Fate element as well, even from that time. Here's a speedy number that combines Maiden and Mercyful Fate from the same album (best song on the album imo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mAT8smriho Here's a killer sample of what they sounded like ten years later (produced by Roy Z, who heard their third album and was enthusiastic about it and got in touch with them): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyBGZ0nef6Y Try to guess who this band worships and immitates: Blazon Stone - Return to Port Royal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rNeMYOhDnM (actually better than the current state of the original band) Blind Guardian: Savage Circus, featuring Thomen Stauch, after he left BG after A Night at the Opera for wanting to play the original speed/power stuff. The clue is in the singer (from Persuader) who does a nice Hansi immitation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3tdIk6Udgs Death. Just recently a total-Death (Leprosy/Spiritual Healing era) clone album was released: Gruesome - Savage Land https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsk1SuRxLTA Again, the vocalist is doing a perfect immitation of Chuck (of that period). The music is borderline theft though! These will do for starters! |

Well, there's the old Pantera/Exhorder thing. Some people reckon the vocals are similar, but to me it was always the guitar sound.
The first time I heard Rammstein I thought "Great! Ministry has released a new album!", and then the vocals started. In German. Helloween were often accused of being Maiden clones early in their career. Morgoth made a very Death-sounding album at one stage, but Death had just changed to their more technical sound. Norther is a dead ringer for Children of Bodom, although why anyone would want to sound like Children of Bodom is beyond me... Another AC/DC rip off from back in the day was Rhino Bucket. MOD sounds a lot like SOD. Municipal Waste is a pretty accurate reinterpretation of Gang Green, early DRI and Cryptic Slaughter.
