The Mighty Nimbus is a supergroup culled from various sludge/doom metal bands, gathered together to make an album of super heavy, downtuned sludge that is a stellar representation of the genre. The result, simply put, is awesome. If you like your metal slow, deep and thundering, you will certainly find plenty to enjoy here.
The album actually starts out comparatively uptempo, with the rollicking "Everything I See" before moving on to the slower, riff driven "I'll Never Weep." Up to this point, the vocalist (on loan from Sixty Watt Shaman) sticks to mainly clean vocals, and his powerful baritone is indeed a wonder to behold. This is about to change however, with the next track, "Broken Hoof," a fast rocker that nevertheless ups the ante on the two openers. As the album progresses, the singing turns to growls and the tempos slow. The relatively catchy melodies of the first few tracks dissolves into pure, unadulterated sludge. The only wasted track is the pointless instrumental "Fenrir." The whole thing is topped off by a really ncie Saint Vitus cover and there you have it, what looks to be the only recorded document of one of the finest metal bands I have had the good fortune to hear. Her's hoping they get back together soon for another album.
