Not many metal bands have had the staying power of Russia's most enduring thrash metal band, Коррозия Металла (Korrozia Metalla, or Corrosion of Metal. Alternate transcriptions include Corrosiya Metalla and Korrosija Metalla), nor faced as many difficulties as a band formed in the former USSR.
While members of the band had played together since 1982, Коррозия Металла came into existence proper in 1984. The band's first live gig, in 1985, was played in a basement and lasted only four songs, as it was shut down by the KGB. The band was legally licensed to play only a limited number of shows, but would sometimes play four gigs a day, and were regularly shut down by authorities.
