IF PROOF were needed that the NWOBHM was a nationwide movement and not one restricted to isolated 'hotbed' pockets, bands like Alverna Gunn - cropping up in the Metal desert of Lowestoft - seemed to confirm it.
This four-piece, named bizarrely after a former Cruft's champion, were never serious contenders but like so many of the others, were good enough to have a high local profile and a promising demo - or two -under their belts.
They were formed in 1978 and split in 1983, their main influences were Budgie, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin.
The band has long since splintered but the driving force, drummer Paul Hale, (who long ago nearly joined Samson), has soldiered on with the Bash Street Kids, last year winning studio time in Rolling Stone Bill Wyman's nationwide talent search.
