The brainchild of guitarist Jim Studnicki, Anomaly began as merely an instrumental solo project. The original recordings featured sequenced drums and bass playing from Studnicki's friend Sean Malone (ex-Cynic, Gordian Knot), but his eventual decision that the songs would sound better with vocals led to the recruitment of Jim Dorian (who was at the time playing with Studnicki in another less successful band). Upon deciding the project would sound better with real drums, Malone recommended Cynic/Gordian Knot bandmate Sean Reinert, who completed the group's lineup.
Anomaly's intention was to make progressive and techincal music which at the same time retained an accessibility and radio-friendly nature. Their sole release was a self-titled album in 1998, which delivered a melodic metal sound more than a bit reminiscent of a modernized Led Zeppelin (not surprising given the inclusion of a cover of "The Rain Song").
