Before fronting the incredibly successful alternative rock band Weezer, vocalist and guitarist Rivers Cuomo co-founded a band known as Avant Garde back in 1985. Formed by Cuomo and his friend Justin Fisher, Avant Garde essentially began as the result of Cuomo yearning for a heavier and more technical band than his and Fisher's first project, Fury. Cuomo started covering Metallica and Fates Warning around this time, which was evident in his band's sound; contrary to Cuomo's work with Weezer, Avant Garde played hard-hitting progressive metal with complex passages and much more virtuosic musicianship. Adding to this was singer Kevin Ridel, whose singing was of a more operatic style akin to Rob Halford of Judas Priest or Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. The band renamed themselves Zoom in 1989, but by 1990, they decided to disband due to lack of funds and diminishing interest in the project.
