Hurdy Gurdy formed in Denmark in 1967 consisting of three members from Peter Belli And The Boom Boom Brothers, guitarist Claus Bohling, drummer Jens Otzen and British vocalist/bassist Mac MacCleod. After touring Scandinavia for a year and breaking many attendance records the band moved to England in 1968 as MacCleod had been deported back to England.
While back in Denmark in 1967 MacCleod wrote to Donovan's manager and asked if he could help out in anyway. Donovan wrote "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" as a gift for the band. Within a few weeks of being deported McCleod went to see Donovan and the band followed MacCleod over to the U.K. and there they recorded the song but Donovan didn't like the heavy take of the track and he later softened it and released it which became a hit.
