Mare is a Canadian progressive sludge metal band from Toronto in Ontario, formed in 2000.
Mare was founded by singer/guitarist Tyler Semrick-Palmateer (formerly of The End), drummer Caleb Collins (Circle Takes the Square) and bassist Rob Shortill. They released a short, self-titled EP in 2004 on Hydra Head Records before the band members decided to split up and go their separate ways in 2007. The band cited a lack of motivation to write and record new material for their demise, although they did reunite in 2012 to perform a few shows.
Even with such a small amount of material, Mare made waves among all in contact with their music because of their extreme blending of styles in their music. The band plays a fervent and well-meshed concoction of sludge metal and dark jazz, as well as a strong tendency to experiment with dissonance, harsh atmosphere, and choir-like hymnal structures.
