A rock combo from Grantham, Lincolnshire, The Next Band were formed in 1976 by John Lockton (gtr), Rocky Newton (v/b) and Frank Noon (d). With a set that mixed Hard Rock and Glam, the trio received their first mention by the music press in 1977 when they joined the Melody Maker-sponsored 'Rock & Folk Contest', but failed to reach the finals.
In March 1978 The Next Band supported Zal (the short-lived outfit led by former S.A.H.B. guitarist Zal Cleminson) on a couple of live dates and at the end of the summer, having relocated to Yorkshire, they entered Hull's Fairview Studios recording an EP which surfaced on November 25 on the Gannet label. Its four self-penned compositions are performed with a certain proficiency and are early examples of the genre that would be called NWOBHM.
