Alternative metal band Pumpkinhead formed as a Red Hot Chilli Peppers cover band, but soon moved on to making music of their own. Guitarist Aaron Hogg had been vocalist and guitarist in The Asylum, a promising Christchurch thrash band who split in late 1990. The rest of the band (Brent Milligan, vocals, Vaughan Watson, bass, Jason Peters, drums, and Jason Harman, guitar) had belonged to various bands in and around Christchurch.
Pumpkinhead focused on playing live and their early songs had heavy influences from the New Zealand bands the members had grown up watching. They drew inspiration from all spectrums including local bands The Gordons, Bailterspace and Straitjacket Fits plus international bands Nirvana, Faith No More and Metallica.
