Red Tide was originally a thrash metal band from Connecticut with five demos to their name. They released Peculiar Institution (1993), The Ideal Creation (1994), Steps to the End (1994), Expressions (1995) and Hybrid (1996).
Red Tide’s music increasingly took on a progressive flavour to its sound with strong jazz fusion influences evident in their two full-length albums; Themes of the Cosmic Consciousness (1997) and Type II (2001).
Red Tide formed in 1992 in Avon Connecticut by Jeff Wu (guitars/vocals) and Justin Foley (drums). Jeff Bennett joined as second guitarist. After a series of thrash metal demo releases, the band began to absorb influences from jazz and fusion. Bass player Andy Dickens joined in 1995 but Bennett left, he was later replaced by Ian Kauffman. With this line-up, the band recorded their 1997 debut Themes of the Cosmic Consciousness.
