Unfortunate to have a similar name to Rochus Misch, Hitler’s last surviving body guard, thrash metal band Rochus formed in 1986 in Erfurt, Thuringia, which at the time was behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany. Despite the unintended Nazi connotations, the band’s name translates roughly to “Rocky” in English.
Drummer Ralf Michels, guitarist Maik Hoffmeister and vocalist Tobias "Tobser" Nehmer started the band with Michael Steglich (bass) and guitarist Heiko "Friedhelm" Axt. Rochus drew their inspiration from bands like Slayer, Death, Sepultura and Kreator.
However, Rochus proved to be Spinal Tap-like with bass players, and Steglich was quickly replaced by Gerd Willnauer in 1986. Willnauer was replaced by Hans-Ulrich Wilke in 1988, and some time during the year the band recorded an unreleased, unnamed demo. Heiko Akt also left the band, and was replaced by ex-Howlin’ Mad guitarist Silvio Skoberle.
