Sarcofagus were formed in 1977 and were among the first metal bands from Finland. They released their debut album Cycle of Life in 1980, followed by Envoy of Death later the same year.
In 1982, due to record label problems, the band changed their name to Kimmo Kuusniemi Band and released their third album, Moottorilinnut. With this album they made history as the first metal band to sing in Finnish. However they broke up after disappointing sales.
In 2000, the band reformed, once again using the Sarcofagus moniker. Their Kimmo Kuusniemi Band album was re-released under the name Motorbirds in 2004. The band went on to release their comeback album Core Values in 2007.
In 2013 the band's latest album Back from the Valley of the Kings was released.
