The Slugs was a sludge metal / southern metal band from New Orleans in Louisiana, formed in 1979 as Shell Shock.

In 1988 Shell Shock disbanded after the suicide of band member Mike "Hatch-Boy" Hatch. The band regrouped in 1988 as Aftershock.

Aftershock quickly changed its name to Wrequiem and by the end of 1989 had again changed its name to Slugs.
A demo and a split EP were released before the band again changed its name to Crowbar.
