Suffokate is a five piece deathcore band from Oakland in California, formed in 2003.
Suffokate was formed by friends Taylor & Lars who both shared a passion for death metal and beatdown music.
Soon after, Bray took over bass duties. The band's mission was to create devastating songs with well-written breakdowns. After several lineup changes and battling it out in the Bay Area hardcore scene, the band caught the attention of Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) and soon released their first album entitled “Oakland” on his label, Stillborn Records before going on to sign with Mediaskare Records.
The spelling of the band's name was explained by ex-vocalist Ricky Hoover as being because a majority of the members of Suffokate are fans of nu metal. Its spelling with a "K" is an homage to bands with intentionally misspelled names such as Korn, Deftones, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit.
