Vitriol is a progressive metal band from Bologna in Italy, formed in 2007.

Some years ago Francesco Lombardo and Michele Panepinto decided to undertake a musical project that culminated in the band Vitriol, and which soon involved Gianluca Pappalardo, Pierangelo Carvello and Alessandro Sanfilippo. The personal tastes and influences of these musicians created a progressive metal sound which is modern but also harks back to the progressive rock bands of the 1970s.

The name of the project inspired their first EP, which is a concept album released in 2009 on Melodic Revolution Records. Vitriol is the acronym of one of the most famous mottoes of Renaissance alchemy: “Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultam Lapidem” (Enter the bowels of the Earth and, through your purification, you will find the hidden stone).
