Simplicity, patience and pacing colliding with power, density and unrelenting volume
Building off the strength of their 2019 debut Etch, Belgium’s Turpentine Valley continue their careful navigation of light, dark, and the spaces just between on their new record Alder.
Their impetus is clearly the rugged, muscular terrain of post-metal, and the force of their delivery honors the legacy of that style. But what distinguishes them are the subtle explorations of fairer sensibilities that emerge from the shadows every so often, granting valuable additional dimension, and offering the listener brief but crucial respite from the otherwise considerable weight of these compositions.
This quality can be seen hard at work on the single “Parabel,” which is firmly rooted in a rugged, sludgy midtempo driven by thick bass, but at the same time, there is a hazy, dreamy guitar melody floating over everything else, attaching a gracefulness to what is an otherwise aggressive passage. The band intermittently shifts into coarser, darker tones, but that central melody consistently finds its way back in, embellishing the track with a warmth that ties everything else together and keeps it from entering too ominous a space.
Ethereal guitar sounds and the right amount of rhythm drags you right in to this song like sirens lure ships to wreck ashore, which Turpentine Valley intends to do when this song cracks open and beats you down only to give you a kickstart somewhere halfway to let you realise a crash with their wall of sound is inevitable."
'PARABEL' is the first single from Turpentine Valley's new album 'ALDER' to be released on vinyl through Dunk!Records and on tape through Ripcord Records on February 25, 2022. ‘PARABEL' also was the first song that was finished for this new album and the only one the band included in their live playlist before.
'ALDER' has been produced by Tim Toegaert. Recording, mixing and mastering was done by Stef Exelmans, On this new album, the band explores the dark boundaries of the instrumental post-metal genre even more explicitly, without compromising on melody and intensity.
Belgium based Turpentine Valley reduces its post-metal to purity, ‘etching’ it to the soul of anyone open to it. No words, massive sound. Hitting it hard. Layered guitars. Growling bass. Allowing music to tell its story: slow, intense, hard and relentless. Although its members already play together for more than half a lifetime, Turpentine Valley still could be called a rather young band, only seeing the light in 2016. Releasing its debut album ‘Etch’ through Dunk!records on November 1st 2019 was the next step in spreading its instrumental post-metal ever since. Three songs from that record (‘Vergeten’, ‘Trauma’ & ‘Abrupt’) can be heard in the soundtrack of the Netflix crime drama 'The Twelve'. On 25 February, Dunk!Records co-releases successor 'ALDER' on 12” vinyl together with A Thousand Arms Records (US), Ripcord Records takes care of the UK release of this album on tape.
