Without question this is an album that has influenced a lot of bands over the years. The first full length studio album from Norway's THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL featured female vocals with lots of atmosphere. When they decided to get heavy we got distorted low end guitars and heavy drums. For many this is where female fronted Gothic was born. The first track come across almost as Folk music with the focus on the vocals and we get more of that on the seventh track "Lengsel" but it's the rest of this album that is attractive to me. We even get an almost 19 minute closer called "Oceana" which is my favourite track on here. It opens and closes with the sounds of waves. "Shaman" is my second favourite while "Death Hymn" rounds out my top three. While i prefer their followup "Painting On Glass" this really is a must-have for those into the Gothic style.
