I’m not sure why grindcore metal gets its own subs called goregrind but similarly nasty versions of death metal equivalents are lumped into brutal death metal or tech death or whatever but the Perm, Russia based ABORTED FETUS makes a good argument for a new sub called goredeath.
This band has been around since 2000 and is a product of not only the 90s death metal scene but very much a progenitor of the goregrind that Carcass released upon an unsuspecting world all the way back in the late 80s.
This band released four EPs before releasing its first “official” album GORESOAKED CLINICAL ACCIDENTS but after the followup “Fatal Dogmatic Damage” decided to record that album and this 2012 version is the result. All i can say is really? You’re seriously worried about quality control on an album that is deemed both brutal death metal as well as slam death metal? The ultimate LOL!
Isn’t ugly the new beautiful after all for fuck’s sake? Ok, this has a fucking killer album cover improvement on par in shock value with Cannibal Corpse’s “The Wretched Spawn” but after that gimme a fekkin break.
OK. Slam death metal. I think you know the shtick by now. Extremely distorted guitar riffs. Bass bombast. Drums that blastbeat and then don’t. Regurgitated belch vocals that sound like dude’s giving himself an oral enema and of course breakdowns, a few tempo changes, rhythmic time signature freakouts and voila, a recipe for the mosh pit! But does this really distinguish itself from the legions of imitators? Not really.
Out of all the sub-categories of death metal perhaps none can fall into the pool of generic uninspiration more readily than the bands that become enveloped by the label brutal death metal. But hey, those fucking album covers make great T-shirts GUARANTEED to piss of the born agains who think breathing is in contradiction to God’s master plan. So how can you go wrong.
I’m an image sucka too but i have learned to differentiate a good idea from actually brilliant music. Yeah, these guys got the physical chops to nail this shit down but they ain’t got the soul to make it stand out and thus are totally indebted to bands like Suffocation and the legion of imitators for its sound but if you live in Perm, Russia perhaps you want an easy ticket out of the doldrums of poverty or whatever so you go with the flow.
No judgments here but i am reviewing an album so all i can say is well done, guys. You really know how to deliver the goods in the expected brutal death metal expectations but you also fail to stand out amongst the plethora of similar sounding bands. For those who cannot get enough of this stuff - you will love it. For those who have a limited threshold - probably not. I’m indifferent. I can appreciate it big time but i also won’t be revisiting it for it doesn’t offer anything beyond the instant mosh pit gratification. Still though, that’s something.
