J-Man
As crazy as this may sound, the title Super Death Explosion Kittens is a fairly accurate description of this EP from Achenar. What essentially sounds like the soundtrack to an 8-bit video game cartridge is then given tons of avant-garde madness, making for a chaotic and noisy listen. Although a release like this may have some appeal to fans of wacky avant-garde/industrial metal, it seems far too unfocused to warrant more attention from me.
The music played on this EP is dominated by complex drum machine patterns, heavily distorted synth tones (I think that's what it is), and an occasional vocal section. Though I have an infinite respect for Duncan Hemingway's unique attitude on Super Death Explosion Kittens, the music simply comes across as too random and sporadic to satisfy this reviewer. This extremely energetic and frenzied EP may make for one or two mildly-fun listens, but the compositions are too shallow to warrant much more attention than that. This one is easily avoidable for most listeners, but it may be worth a look from 8-bit video game fanatics who are looking for some crazy music to keep them entertained. For that (albeit small) audience alone, Super Death Explosion Kittens is worthy of 1.5 stars. More focused compositions would've done this EP wonders.
