"An Extravagance of Norm" is the debut full-length studio album by Polish, Olsztyn based death metal act Aeon. The band name is an acronym for "An Extravagance of Norm". "An Extravagance of Norm" was released through Diachell Musik in February 2008.
The music on the album is technically well played death metal with a few nods toward the more experimental part of the black metal scene. An act like Dødheimsgard is at times a valid reference. I hear a couple of influences from Satyricon too. The band are well playing and the raspy/growling vocals are delivered with conviction albeit in a slightly one-dimensional fashion. The pace is changed often and vary from heavy riffing sections to blast beat sections. One of the stylistic elements that is used often is playing heavy riffs or mid-paced atmospheric open chord/dissonant riffing while blasting away at full speed underneath.
"An Extravagance of Norm" is in many ways a high quality death metal release with blackened tendencies, but while the material overall is strong, the tracks aren´t that memorable and I struggle to remember any of them after finishing the album. It´s not a major deal and I still enjoy the album while it´s playing, but considering the strong musicianship and the powerful professional sound production it´s a bit of a shame that the songwriting isn´t sharper and more focused on memorable moments. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is still deserved though.
