Primeval Scum
I'm glad Amorphis moved on to greener pastures after Far From the Sun, but that being said, I still think this was a really good album.
This album is far more memorable and has more variety than Am Universum and Tuonela.
It doesn't match up to the brilliant revival that was Eclipse, but this album is the pinnacle of the "middle years" of Amorphis' career.
There are still a lot of lively folky melodies ("Planetary Misfortune') and engaging lyrics abound ("Day of Your Beliefs"). Many songs are energetic and catchy ("Mourning Soil") and others are slower and more dramatic such as the closer "Smithereens", which is still one of my all-time favorite Amorphis songs.
If you're looking for a place to get into Amorphis, don't start here. Check out Tales From the Thousand Lakes or Eclipse. However, for fans of the band, this is still an album worth returning to often.
