ASBESTOSDEATH, the band that led to the world favorite stoner metal band Sleep started in 1990 and released two back to back EPs that each featured two tracks. The first of the two EPs as “Dejection” and UNCLEAN was the second. Why the band didn’t release these as a single item is beyond me but the two EPs were finally released together in 2007 in CD format as “Dejection / Unclean.”
As with the other EP, both these tracks, “Anguish” and “The Suffering” were reworked and re-recorded to include on Sleep’s debut album “Volume One” which came out the next year in 1991. The sound on both these EPs is much more in the extreme sludge metal world in the vein of early Eyehategod but would be reworked into a more Sabbathy sounding doom metal as sleep.
Both these tracks are excellent as they deliver a filthy angry sludge mania with heavy guitar distortion and alternating doom laden tempos followed by faster upbeat rage. The vocals are shouted at the top of the lungs on these two and the guitar fuzz that Sleep was famous for finds a few moments here and there but mostly this is a choppy no fucks given sort of metal madness. The rhythms are choppy and the compositions are much more complex than the droning simplicity of later Sleep albums. This is an interesting start for a stoner metal band.
