"Carnage Remains" is the first demo recording by Dutch death metal act Asphyx. The demo was independently released in 1988. It´s a crude instrumental demo tape featuring only two tracks. "Carnage Remains" and "Rectified Suicide". The latter was subsequently used as the basis for "Thoughts of an Atheist", which appeared on both the early 1989 "Enter the Domain" demo and on the July 1989 "Crush the Cenotaph" demo.
Asphyx formed in 1987 and it´s obvious from listening to this demo that they were very young and inexperinced in both playing their instruments and recording their music, because this pretty much just sounds like the guitarist (Tonny Brookhuis) rehearsing the two songs, while you can occassionally hear some crashes and a snare, but that´s about it for the drums. As the demo is fully instrumental the tracks are just very early versions of what Asphyx would work on the next couple of years. Just with a more thrashy riffing style, which isn´t odd considering the time of release. But while there are glimpses here and there of what Asphyx would evolve into in just a few years, "Carnage Remains" is ultimately an almost unlistenable release and a 1 star (10%) rating isn´t all wrong.
