"The Dead Shall Inherit" is the debut full-length studio album by US death metal act Baphomet. The album was released through Deaf Records (sub-label to Peaceville Records) in May 1992. The band was formed in 1987 and they used the Baphomet name until 1992 when they were forced to change name to Banished because of the German thrash metal band which owned the rights to the Baphomet name. They released the "Deliver Me unto Pain (1993)" under the Banished monicker and then disbanded.
The music on "The Dead Shall Inherit" is fairly standard US death metal in the, for the time, brutal end of the spectrum. There is good rythmic variation with both blasting and mid-paced more groove based sections. The vocals are almost completely unintelligible growls and quite frankly a bit monotone. The sound production is decent but not really great and overall "The Dead Shall Inherit" is not a death metal album that stands out from the pack. That doesn´t mean it´s a bad quality album, but to my ears Baphomet lack a personal sound. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
