Beware of the bat...
Genre: traditional metal / speed metal / crust
Enter the BAT an American band who look back to heavy metal's dirtier roots - not just in terms of production but also in terms of the music itself.
The five tracks on this release are, as the title indicates, primitive, but by no means shitty. BAT manage to harness the captivating energy and rage of primitive riffs and d-beats, combining this with a raw rock 'n' roll attitude. Needless to say, this combo works. While tracks like 'Total Wreckage' and 'Rule of the Beast' adopt a crusty aggression - the latter also paying homage to early speed metal -, 'Code Rude' ventures into early Celtic Frost territory, and 'Primitive Age' is a crossover thrasher that should make fans of S.O.D., Nuclear Assault, and D.R.I. happy.
The production is fuzzy, and the vocals harsh (without being growled or screamed), and the music is, as mentioned, simple. If you like you metal raw and dirty and infused with d-beats and have a soft spot for Discharge, then you should give this release a listen or two.
