UMUR
"...and We Fell" is the first demo recording by Finnish death/thrash/heavy metal act Benefits Forgot. The demo was independently released in November 1991. Benefits Forgot formed in 1989 and released two demos before disbanding.
Stylistically the three tracks on the 10:08 minutes long demo feature a hybrid death, thrash, and heavy metal style, which is a bit hard to describe correctly. The vocals are snarling aggressive growling. The kind of vocals which you often find on death/thrash metal releases rather than on pure death metal releases. The music is also somewhat thrashy but there´s still a death metal edge to the procedings, so maybe death/thrash metal is the most correct description of the sound found on "...and We Fell".
The sound production values are pretty high considering that this is a demo release, and every instrument and vocal part are clearly heard in the mix. It´s not a particularly dark and brutal sounding production, but it certainly makes Benefits Forgot stand out on the scene (along with their odd band name).
Benefits Forgot are a well playing unit and lead vocalist/bassist Teemu Korpi delivers his raw snarling vocals with conviction. Upon conclusion this is a good quality first demo from Benefits Forgot and I appreciate the fact that they have chosen a different path from many of their contemporaries. This is a pretty unique sounding release compared to a lot of the other Finnish death metal demos from those days. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
