J-Man
With a history dating back as far as 1992 under the monicker Suffering, Beyond Mortal Dreams are undoubtedly one of the more experienced Australian death metal acts. Even though it wasn't until their reformation in 2003 that they began officially releasing music, they shared the stage with artists as well-renowned as Deicide and Cannibal Corpse during their original nineties' incarnation. 2012's Dreaming Death is the first EP release from Beyond Mortal Dreams, and although it is my introduction to their discography, I can tell that we're dealing with a professional and experienced group of death metal musicians here.
Dreaming Death mostly brings US death metal acts like Immolation, Nile, Morbid Angel, and Incantation to mind with its grimy riffs, suffocating atmospheres, and complex riffage, but I also detect a mild influence from their fellow Australians in Portal. It's not a huge similarity, but some of these riffs are twisted enough to make a valid comparison. Over in just over 18 minutes, Dreaming Death is not a particularly long release, but Beyond Mortal Dreams stuffs enough material into the playing time to make it a worthy purchase and an enjoyable listen. Although it's nothing earth-shattering, Dreaming Death is a strong EP release that death metal fans should investigate.
