"Prophets of Hell" is a demo release by UK, Coventry based death metal act Bolt Thrower. It´s their second 1988 demo with new vocalist Karl Willets who replaced original singer Alan West after the September 1987 "Concession of Pain" demo. I´m not 100% sure about the timeline here, but if I have to guess my best guess would be that this demo was recorded after the recording of the band´s debut full-length studio album "In Battle There Is No Law!" (June 1988, Vinyl Solution).
There are more than one thing which give this away. First of all "Prophets of Hell" wasn´t included on "In Battle There Is No Law!", secondly Willets now use growling vocals, and thirdly "Prophets of Hell" ended up being re-recorded and included as a CD bonus track on Bolt Thrower´s sophomore full-length studio album "Realm of Chaos (Slaves to Darkness) (October 1989, Earache Records)".
This version of the track is raw, unpolished and packed in a relatively lo-fi recording quality, but it´s still obvious that Bolt Thrower had evolved since the thrash metal/hardcore influenced early attempt at death metal on "In Battle There Is No Law!". A 2.5 - 3 star (55%) rating is warranted.
