"Brutality Version 1" is the first demo recording by US, Tampa, Florida based death metal act Brutality. The demo was released in January 1988. A "Brutality Version 2" demo was released in April 1988, featuring the exact same tracks, but those are completely different recordings, which the band opted to record and release, because their master tape for this first demo broke after only 50 copies were made. So only 50 original cassette tape copies of this recording exists, but the tracks were included on the 2011 "The Demos" compilation album, which have made them more widely available. Brutality formed in 1986 under the Abomination monicker but after releasing a demo they changed their name to Brutality.
The four tracks on the 14:15 pretty much sound like beefed up and slightly more brutal versions of the thrash/speed metal tracks from the 1987 "Abomination" demo. To my ears they are actually a lesser version of the material from the Abomination demo, but I see the drummer has been replaced between the two demos, and new drummer Ken Karg doesn´t reach the energetic and well playing heights of original drummer Donny Yanson.
The sound quality of the demo is decent considering that this is a demo release, but the songwriting isn´t particularly interesting and it sounds like the band are having a hard time figuring out what they wanna do and play. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.
