PIKE 154 - CELLAR YAWNS is the 53rd album released by BUCKETHEAD in 2015. This album clocks in fifty seconds over the half hour mark. It is all instrumental and BUCKETHEAD plays all the instruments. This PIKE has four tracks.
The first track “Side Less Well” at 9:05 begins the journey and is a rather strange mix of slow-tempoed soft guitar tones and a more hard rocker riff but all is very slow. These two styles kind of dance around together. I keep expecting this to go somewhere but it just repeats the whole time. Quite boring.
Track two “Damp” at 8:40 and starts off with mellow guitars and then becomes a slow-tempoed rocker. This is another one that just kinda goes through the motions. It goes on and on and on without any real melodic breakthroughs. I find this one boring as well.
Track three “Clothstraw” at 2:49 and is the shortest track. It starts out even mellower with an ethereal sounding clean guitar and an ambient background. No percussion or bass. Super slow tempo. This one isn’t bad for what it is and mercifully succinct and to the point.
Track four is the title track at 10:16 and in sharp contrast to “Clothstraw” begins as an aggressive metal monster with speedy riffing which alternates straight forward thrash metal with segments of some strange time signatures. The riffing is highly bombastic. Not a bad sound but like all the tracks on this one it just doesn’t go anywhere. It is repetitive with little variations. There is an ambient breakdown towards the end that comes from nowhere then back to the same riffing. I like this one the most on here but it does become monotonous.
CELLAR YAWNS is appropriately titled. It makes me YAWN and i want to banish it to the CELLAR.
