PIKE 185 - 22 DAYS TIL HALLOWEEN: I GOT THIS COSTUME FROM THE SEARS CATALOG is the 84th album released by BUCKETHEAD in 2015 and the 10th installment in the countdown to HALLOWEEN. This is yet another psychotic episode and dark ambient horror soundtrack for October 31st in participating countries. This one shows a little humor in the title which every track has the same name. On this one there are 7 tracks that run together so in effect a 30:04 ride through the wild and weird world of BUCKETHEADLAND where Mr Chicken creates all the sounds on this and once again succeeds in creepifying the reality of those who choose to listen.
This one is much better than the last. It is back to freaky sounds that startle and alarm. It is the stuff of nightmares. It is harsh and abrasive and amplified and then turned up to 11. It starts out with a sound that makes me think of the universe’s stomach grumbling and then a possessed jet propulsion and then it gets weird. I know. Hard to believe. Something about this PIKE is really freaky. BH has latched onto the stuff of nightmares and laid it down to digital format. Maybe it’s because it is unfamiliar? Human nature dictates the unfamiliar and the startling equals fear so no wonder. I have an appetite for this though and am somewhat immune so it has to have an entertainment value for me to appreciate beyond. I have to say that this one has enough weirdness to keep me listening.
Once again this is a parade of random sounds that are to create a certain response. This is not music per se at least not built upon recognizable standard musical scales that most music derives from. There does seem to be some sort of “rhythm” to the madness but it is beyond my intellect and more prone to induce my subconscious. It’s the kind of sonic parade that keeps my attention heightened like a meerkat scouting the skies in fear of that faster-than-the-speed-of-light Tawny’s eagles that blitzkrieg attack and make off with the booty. OK i got it now. What this sounds to me for a big chunk of this album is like angry Humpback whale song attack calls. Oooo, now i’m scared. And you thought sharks were dangerous. Come to think of it, it is kinda Jaws-ish at times.
This one is pretty good in the fight or flight response. It has more than enough jitteriness to keep me on pins and needles. Isn’t that what a good HALLOWEEN soundtrack should have? I think so. This one is actually really effective for me. How does BH keep coming up with this stuff? Is he possessed by chickens? Now that’s a scary thought but not as scary as getting your HALLOWEEN COSTUME FROM THE SEARS CATALOG!
