CANNABIS CORPSE SPLATTERHASH reviews

Specialists/collaborators reviews

UMUR
"Splatterhash" is a split release by US death metal acts Cannabis Corpse and Ghoul released through Tankcrimes Records in January 2014. The split is available on CD, vinyl (three different color versions), and as digital download.

"Splatterhash" features 4 tracks and a full playing time of 12:35 minutes. The two artists are each represented by 2 tracks. The two Cannabis Corpse tracks are in the more catchy end of the brutal death metal spectrum featuring their usual gorified weed lyrics. Both "The Inhalation Plague" and "Shatter Their Bongs" are solid death metal tracks, but still pretty standard for the genre. The two Ghoul tracks are a bit more impressive to my ears. Ghoul are slightly more old school sounding and incorporate both hardcore/grindcore and thrash metal influences in their music and as a consequence their two tracks display a more diverse sound than the case is with the two Cannabis Corpse tracks. I especially hear nods toward late eighties/early nineties Carcass in the music, but Ghoul make sure to put their own touch on the music. "Inner Sanctum" is the most interesting track featuring quite a few stylistic elements while "Spill Your Guts" is more basic hardcore/grindcore tinged death metal.

The sound production on all tracks is of good quality and both bands are also well playing. Overall "Splatterhash" is a relatively strong release and especially the Ghoul tracks make my blood boil. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
