"Perpetual Penance" is a compilation album release by Japanese death metal act Coffins. The compilation was released through Horror Pain Gore Death Productions in June 2015. "Perpetual Penance" is not a best of compilation but rather a compilation of rarities collected from various splits, demos, live releases, and singles. The 16 tracks featured on the compilation are distributed over two discs and there is just short of 100 minutes of music on "Perpetual Penance".
Stylistically this is Coffins as we know them though, so there are no odd surprises or experiments featured on "Perpetual Penance". This is old school death metal with a doomy edge through and through. The most raw and filthy part of the Swedish scene comes to mind and also US artists like Deceased and especially Autopsy. There is naturally slight differences in sound quality throughout the compilation as the tracks were recorded during various sessions and some even live (featuring a well sounding live sound quality), but everything features a professional, yet filthy and raw sound production, which of course suits the music perfectly.
Coffins is arguably a great act when it comes to old school death metal and "Perpetual Penance" is the release for the fans who just can´t get enough of their music. To my ears their music is a bit one-dimensional and lacks a unique sound to set them apart from other artists on the scene playing a similar style, but if you´re content with more of the same in a pretty good quality, "Perpetual Penance" is a recommendable release. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating.
