God is delusion...
Genre: death metal
After a hiatus of 18 years, the Finnish death metal veterans in Convulse are back with a two-track EP, showing that they are still the masters of old school death metal.
The two tracks sound like they could have been made in the 1990s, but the musicianship and production are very much up to date, so do not expect your average sloppy buzz-guitared 90s death metal.
The first track, 'Inner Evil' features some Autopsy like figures and also features some nice crushing riffs. The second track, 'God is Delusion' combines heavy passages with thrashy riffs and even some crusty d-beats. The coda of the song features melodic guitar leads and takes, with its lush feel, the song in a completely different direction from the other parts of the track.
Both songs are very well put together, reflecting how good songwriters Convulse are, and the musicianship is impeccable. The growled vocals are more hoarse than guttural, and some might find this a turn-off, but I think it works just fine.
A fine comeback, Convulse's "Inner Evil" shows that old school death metal is very much relevant today, and any fan of 90s death metal - particularly Autopsy and crust/hardcore-inspired Stockholm death metal - should definitely check this release out.
