"Standin' on the Never Never" is an EP release by Danish hard rock act Disneyland After Dark (now D-A-D). The EP was released through Mega Records in May 1985. It´s the band´s debut release and as it proved relatively succesful, Mega Records extented the corraboration and opted to release Disneyland After Dark´s debut full-length studio album "Call of the Wild" (February 1986).
"Standin' on the Never Never" features 3 tracks and a total playing time of 10:22 minutes. "Marlboro Man" would be re-recorded and included on "Call of the Wild" and "Never Never (Indian Love)" would be a CD bonus track on "Call of the Wild" (same version as this one). Opening track "Up, Up Over the Mountain Top" is exclusive to this EP though (at least until it was included on the December 1989 "D.A.D. Special" compilation album, along with "Never Never (Indian Love)").
The three tracks show three different sides of Disneyland After Dark. "Up, Up Over the Mountain Top" is an upbeat cowpunk song, "Marlboro Man" is a country influenced hard rock song, and "Never Never (Indian Love)" is a melancholic country/americana influenced rock song. At this point in time Disneyland After Dark were obviously still searching for their identity and it would be a few more releases before they found it. "Standin' on the Never Never" is overall a good quality debut release from Disneyland After Dark, showing great potential although the promise is not completely fullfilled here. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
