Germany's worst death metal...
Genre: AC/DC goes death metal
I learn something new about myself every day. The other day, I learned that I am allergic to AC/DC and death metal blends. Well, that is, bands like Carcass and Arch Enemy have successfully incorporated hard rock elements into death metal, but Debauchery take it all the way, writing AC/DC-style hard rock songs with growled death metal vocals and silly lyrics. The problem is that their music ends up generally sounding very silly and comes across as a bad parody on other bands who more successfully incorporate hardrock elements into mere extreme metal. Now, I think that humor and parody are integral parts of Debauchery's music (which then makes it an entirely different story), but that does not change the fact that the music on this album just does not appeal to me.
They have even managed to emulate an AC/DC-esque hard rock guitar sound, which suits the hard rock tunes quite well, but there are a couple of more thrashy tunes (like "Death Will Entertain"), and the hard rock sound is just too weak for those tracks.
I would have preferred it if they'd just trashed all the death and thrash elements and gone with an all out hard rock album, or if they'd skipped the AC/DC sound and gone with a much more brutal guitar sound - then they might even have pulled off the combination of AC/DC rock and growled vocals.
No, I do not like this album very much... but it's probably just me who is weird, because, as far as I understand, Debauchery are actually quite popular. So, forget this review and follow the masses.
