UMUR
"Coal Black Hearses" is an EP release by French/ English black metal act Decrepit Spectre. The EP was released in December 2008 ( on the 24th no less) by Paradigms Recordings. Decrepit Spectre features several members from Code including frontman Kvohst ( also Void, Dødheimsgard, Gangrenator and Hexvessel).
The relation to Code is further strengthened when you listen to the three tracks on the 16:41 minute long EP. If you ask me "Coal Black Hearses" could easily have been a Code release. Kvohst as usual delivers both aggressive raspy vocals and some clean vocals too. Like the case is with Code, there is a strong Dødheimsgard influence in the music but without reaching the adventurous hights of said act. The music on the three tracks is not your standard fare black metal though, for that there are too many experiments, dissonant chords and unusual ideas. The quality is high and I´m well entertained throughout.
...So if you enjoy the output by the other Kvohst related acts I´m sure you´ll enjoy "Coal Black Hearses" too. It´s not a revelation, but it´s well produced, well composed and well performed and a 3.5 star rating feels right to me.
