"Psalms of the Moribund" is the second full-length studio album by German death metal act Defeated Sanity. The album was released through Grindethic Records in March 2007. It´s the successor to "Prelude to the Tragedy" from 2004. Defeated Sanity was formed in 1993 by drummer Lille Gruber and his father Wolfgang Teske (guitars). The duo (with a shifting cast of additional musicians) released a string of demos through the 90s and early 00s, untit they secured a two-album label deal with Grindethic Records.
Stylistically the music on the album is US influenced brutal and technically well played death metal. Especially early Suffocation comes to mind when listening to the album but Defeated Sanity take it a bit further in terms of extremity, brutality, and technical playing. The extremely brutal and unintelligible nature of the growling vocals makes that part of the music a bit one-dimensional, but the vocals are as such well performed. Defeated Sanity are a very well playing act and you´ll find plenty of brutal and at times pretty technical riffing and drumming on the album. The songs have a tendency to sound much the same though and it´s a minor issue that a 29:06 minute long album doesn´t feature more variation. When that is said this is still highly effective, well written, and especially well performed brutal death metal.
So upon conclusion "Psalms of the Moribund" is a professional, well produced (featuring a massive and brutal sounding production job) and well played brutal death metal album with some minor flaws (one-dimensional growling vocals and a lack of variation). A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
