"Consumed by Your Poison" is the debut full-length studio album by Canadian deathcore act Despised Icon. The album was originally released through Galy Records in October 2002 but saw a re-release through Century Media Records in April 2006. The re-release features a different cover artwork to the original release.
The music on the album is technically well played deathcore. It´s brutal and at times crushingly heavy, with both uptempo technical parts and groovy down- mid tempo breakdowns. The band features two lead vocalists, which makes the vocal part of the band´s sound relatively varied. There´s everything from deep growling to higher pitched screaming to some processed piggy squeals. The songwriting is generally on a good level, but the tracks aren´t that different from each other and even though the album is less than 30 minutes in length, my attention starts to wander after a couple of tracks.
The effectful and powerful sound production is a positive asset that makes "Consumed by Your Poison" a great listen though and of course also the high level musicianship. So it´s in the songwriting department where the band aren´t fully matured. From my personal point of view the piggy squeal vocal parts are also really hard to appreciate, but that might just be an aquired taste. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.
