Dreams of the Carrion Kind is the debut and sole full-length studio album by US death metal act Disincarnate. The band is probably mostly known for hosting the omnipresent virtuoso guitarist James Murphy ( who also handles bass on this album). James Murphy had previously worked with acts such as Agent Steel, Obituary, Cancer and Death. The lead vocals ( brutal growls) are handled by Bryan Cegon, Jason Carman plays rhythm guitar and Tommy Viator plays the drums.
The music on Dreams of the Carrion Kind is US death metal in the vein of acts such as Malevolent Creation and Monstrosity. It´s a pretty average release if you ask me though and personally I think Disincarnate got their reputation as a legendary US death metal act because they had James Murphy in the lineup and not because the music on this album stand out as something unique or especially powerful for that matter. There´s nothing wrong as such but there´s nothing outstanding on the album either. You got tight musicianship, a pretty good Colin Richardson production ( not his best), Roadrunner Records supporting you ( remember this was 1993 and Roadrunner Records were Gods when it came to death metal releases) and even a couple of famous guest vocalist appeareances in Jeff Walker ( Carcass) and Aaron Stainthope ( My Dying Bride) but none of those features help increase my interest in Dreams of the Carrion Kind. I expected much more. A 3 star rating is warranted.
