Genre: crossover thrash / speed metal
With a band name like Drünken Bastards, you can't go wrong. If you like old school speed/thrash metal fused with crossover and sprinkled with traditional metal and classic punk rock elements, then you won't go wrong with Drünken Bastards' "Horns of the Wasted".
The tracks on the album are pretty straightforward, but surprisingly varied, which is one of the main attractions of the album. 'Drink With Satan' features both some straight up punk riffage and some guitar figures that sound like a twisted version of running Wild, and there is an awesome rocking metal guitar solo as well. Similarly, the aptly titled 'Alcoholic Big Tits' features both raw punk rock and hard rock riffage, while 'Baptized in Speed and Blood' is a midtempo old school thrasher (which features some skatepunk passages). The closing track 'Prophecy of the Evening Star' features some pretty good Judas Priest-like traditional metal riffage and a couple of rocking guitar solos. 'Posercrusher' offers some energetic d-beating, and 'Toxic Patrol' is a speed metal affair with references to NWoBHM, while 'Destroy te Factory' combines punk with melodic black metal.
The lyrical universe evolves around booze and boobs and, as you might have guessed, is more at the humorous end of the crossover lyrical continuum.
Perfectly combining punk and metal, "Horns of the Wasted" is fully enjoyable - especially if you like your metal primitive and energetic. Fans of punk metal should definitely check it out if they have 20 minutes to spare - and, I am sure that nobody will hold it against you if you guzzled a couple of cans of beer while listening to the album.
