Return to Gehenna...
Genre: black metal
I admittedly have not developed the ability to fully appreciate the harshest and blackest of raw black metal, but I would be lying if I said that I had no fascination whatsoever with black metal. I tend to prefer the more eclectic, hybrid and avant-garde approaches to black metal (knowing that many black metal kvltists probably would reject many of those as not being true black metal). In Endezzma's "Erotik Nekrosis" I find one of those approaches to black metal that click with me instantly.
Rather than going for totally bleak purist black metal, Endezzma's music is truly eclectic and hybrid, combining the tremolo-picking-and-blastbeat feature of black metal with elements from a host of other metal and even non-metal genres. Thus, we are treated to crusty passages popping up side by side with epic sounding parts as well as thrashy and deathy bits.
Not only eclectic, I would say that "Erotik Nekrosis" is quite progressive, too, with 'Enigma of the Sullen' featuring neoclassical-cum-psychedelic organ effects and 'Against them All' combining a punky attitude with spacy keyboards and odd time signatures, while 'Soulcleansing' has an almost gothic feel to it. From black metal, the album inherits its intensity and dissonant chords.
While purists might reject this album for its eclectism and use of melody, those who like avant-garde and progressive black metal are bound to really enjoy "Erotik Nekrosis".
