Lost control...

Genre: death metal

Originally self-released in 2010, "You Gods, My Enemies" was released in Europe yesterday (and on the 18th in North America) on Season of Mist with a new, and incredibly cool, cover art (which you can see here: http://season-of-mist.com/common/covers_releases/high/SOM249.jpg) - I think it is much better than the original cover art.

But this is about the music, of course, and we are dealing with death metal which combines technicality and groove. Many of the tunes are based on groovy riffs, some of which, have an almost djent quality to them, but Eternal Gray spice up their music with lots of technically advanced things, such as complex guitar figures, odd time signatures, surprising changes and so on. I would not call this this style melodic death metal as such, but there certainly are some very melodic elements every now and then, which add some dynamism to the album. Personally, I quite like the two edged focus on groove and technicality that characterizes this album, because it makes it both catchy and interesting at the same time. There are also some spacey elements, some of which draw on noise while others are generated electronically, throughout the album.

The vocals are, of course, growled, and they suit the groovy and semi-technical style of death metal quite well. The overall degree of musicianship is very high, and the performance is incredibly tight, and there are some really tasty guitar solos, too.

Fans of technical and progressive death metal, who do not mind a lot of groove, should definitely check this riff-strong album out.
