"Bloodred Massacre" is the 4th full-length studio album by German death metal act Fleshcrawl. The album was released through Black Mark Production in October 1997. It´s the succcessor to "Bloodsoul" from 1996 and features one lineup change since the predecessor as lead vocalist Alex Pretzer has been replaced by Sven Gross.
The change on the lead vocalist spot doesn´t affect the direction of Fleshcrawl´s music one bit though. The material on "Bloodred Massacre" continues down the same old school death metal path as tread on "Bloodsoul (1996)". It´s particularly the early 90s Swedish death metal scene (and Dismember in particular) that has served as inspiration, and it´s pretty interesting that a German band can almost sound more "Swedish" than some of the Swedish bands from that time. They even manage to make a cover of Slayer´s "Necrophiliac" sound like an old school Swedish death metal track.
So obviously this is not the most original sounding release, but Fleshcrawl are a well playing band, who understand how to write and play old school death metal. "Bloodred Massacre" is well produced too and upon conclusion it´s a good quality death metal album. The lack of a recognisable personal sound drags my rating down a bit but a 3 star (60%) rating is still warranted.
