"Eon" is the debut full-length studio album by US, Connecticut based death metal act Formless. The album was independently released in May 2016. Formless was formed in 2009 and have released a couple of minor releases before "Eon". Shortly after the release of "Eon" it was announced that Formless had disbanded.
The music style on "Eon" is technical/progressive death metal. The vocals are predominantly relatively intelligible growling, but there are occasional use of clean female vocals on the album too (courtesy of guitarist Annie Grunwald). The female vocals aren´t melodic angelic type singing, but rather a more monotone type of vocals, which aren´t completely unlike the female vocals on releases by acts like Aghora and Portal (both Cynic related acts).
The musicianship is high class on all posts. These guys/girls can play and they are not afraid to show it. Not that there are any unnecessary notes, forced fast runs, or anything like that on the album, but we´re treated to multible tempo- and time signature changes and technical precision playing throughout. It´s quite atmospheric too at times though, and "Eon" is generally a reasonably varied release.
"Eon" features a well sounding production too, and considering that it´s a self-released album, the quality is generally very high. Formless aren´t the most original or distinct sounding act though, and it´s in that department the "Eon" could have been more interesting. More memorable hook laden songwriting. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
