Looking for some avant-garde technical death metal that is truly out there? Look no further than GLYPTOGLOSSIO who released this short but sweet little explosive monster upon the metal world in 2016. This sonic rotisserie of the tortured bizarre is the offspring of the fertile imagination of Colin Marston who is a seasoned veteran in the avant-garde and tech death world having worked with Behold… The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, Krallice and Gorguts amongst countless other projects. The name GLYPTOGLOSSIO is derived from the word “glossolalia” which has the definition of: fabricated and non-meaningful speech, especially such speech associated with a trance state or certain schizophrenic syndromes.
That pretty much sums up the music here as well. This is taking the free-form jazz of the 60s (think Cecil Taylor and beyond) and reinterpreting it into a death metal context with bizarre robotic synthesized vocals that remind me of a demented version of Kraftwerk. As such we get a meandering frenzy of chaotic swirls incorporating death metal riffs, virtuosic scale wankery up and down the guitar neck, spastic drumming patterns guaranteed to rouse the deceased and a total absence of any sort of traditional song structures. This is the very essence of primeval chaos emerging from a big bang of sound where every element is struggling and fighting it out to stand out amongst the crowd. The epitome of melody mutilation and bantering bedlam.
GLYPTOGO5510 is only a mere 25 minutes and 34 seconds but feels like a life time of sound condensed into that short period. The effect is indeed a psychedelic swirl of nonsensical musical syntax that morphs and attacks the senses randomly while unexpected outbursts accompany a hypnotic sounding robot that narrates a non-existent tale with death metal growls occasionally finding their way into the mix and often sounding a little agitated. This is some wild stuff here and sounds like what i would imagine if Psyopus and Gorguts got together with the robot from Lost In Space that seriously malfunctioned and took over the final production of the project. This one is exclusively for the most hardcore and unorthodox metal heads out there. But what a wild ride it is.
