Night after night...
Genre: traditional heavy metal
Celebrating the release of Chicago rockers High Spirits' second full-length album "Your Are Here" on Hell's Headbangers, this 7'' EP has been released in a limited edition. The EP contains two classic tracks from the band's underground catalog - namely, 'High Spirit' and 'Night after Night'.
The former is an uptempo rocker which seems particularly inspired by NWoBHM, trating the listener to harmonic twin guitars and melodic choruses, as well as high energy riffage and driving drum beats. The latter is, while not boring, a bit more bland. The blandness is not inherent in 'Night after Night' - it is relative to 'High Spirits', understood such that 'High Spirits' is such a great tune that it makes 'Night after Night' look worse than it actually is. 'Night after Night' is a midtempo rocker which revolves around a simple midtempo riff, which reminds me of early 80s heavy metal, and an admittedly memorable chorus. The choice of tracks on this 7'' is a bit odd, because High Spirits' catalog is full of compelling rockers that would hold up much stronger to 'High Spirits', so it strikes me a bit odd that they went with 'Night after Night'.
Vinyl collectors and fans of old school heavy metal should definitely track down this EP. In itself, 'Night after Night' is not bad, and 'High Spirits' is such a good traditional metal song that it, in itself, is worth purchasing this release for.
