UMUR
"Full of Hell" is the debut full-length studio album by US sludge metal act Howl. The album was released in May 2010 by Relapse Records.
The music on the album is raw and powerful sludgy metal. The production is organic and rough and the vocals are aggressive ( almost growling at times) and very convincing. It´s an album full of little details that reveal themselves after a few listens. I wasn´t impressed upon my inital listen of "Full of Hell", but it´s the kind of album I´d advice giving a lot of spins. A grower in other words. The band are well playing and there´s the right amount of "rehearsal" room atmosphere on the album to give it the right feel. The use of harmony guitars is a neat element that really gives some of the tracks that little extra something that elevates the music from great to excellent. Take a listen to a track like "Asherah" or the closing minute of "Jezebel" to hear what I mean. Don´t expect this to be all melodic and sweet though. This is first and foremost raw and heavy sludgy metal with really aggressive vocals.
"Full of Hell" has not been an easy listen for me, but it sure has been rewarding and a 3.5 - 4 star rating is deserved.
